Back to Family Record |
John was born on 20/05/1825, the first son of Donald MacCormick 1780 and Margrate MacKinnon. He married Ann Margaret MacCormick, daughter of John MacCormick 1784 and Mary MacDonald and they had fourteen children - ten born on Iona and the four in Govan, Glasgow.
In 1867 John - then a merchant on Iona - got permission to raise his cottage to two stories and make it into the Argyll Hotel. The St. Columba Hotel started up a year later in 1868 - it used to be the Free Church Manse.
John was listed in the 1871 census as a merchant and hotelier in Argyll Hotel, Iona . (from Connie)
In the 1881 census he was not listed, but his wife is listed as head of the family and wife of a commercial traveller, living with 10 of their 13 children, in Govan Road, Glasgow.
The youngest 4 of their children were born in Govan so the family must have moved from Iona to Govan sometime between 1873 and 1876.
John died @ 53 Clarence Street, Glasgow, on 6/11/1887 from a gastric ulcer.
His wife Ann Margaret died on 25/12/1897 @ 256 Allison Street, Glasgow, of chronic bronchitis, kidney and heart failure.
By 1901 census Mary, Hugh, John, Annie, Alick, and Joan were living @ 130 Nithsdale Road, Pollocksheilds, Glasgow.
